Why file size and quality are not the same fight

It is easy to assume that a smaller file always means a worse-looking photo, but that is not how modern image compression works. A lot of a photo’s data describes detail your eyes cannot distinguish, especially in smooth gradients and areas of similar color. Good compression removes that redundant data first, so you can cut file size substantially before any loss becomes visible.

The goal is to find the point where the file is much smaller but still looks identical at the size it will be viewed. Three levers get you there.

Lever 1: resize to the size you actually need

This is the most overlooked step and often the most effective. If a photo is 4000 pixels wide but will be shown at 1200 pixels on a web page, three quarters of the pixels are wasted. Resizing down removes that data cleanly, with no ugly artifacts, because you are simply not storing detail nobody will see.

Lever 2: choose the right format

Format has a big effect on both size and quality:
